Many believe dementia — a set of symptoms characterized by significant, inhibitory cognitive decline — is a normal side effect of aging. That said, while over 9.9 million new cases occur every year around the world, the onset of dementia is not inherent to the process of aging.

UCSF researchers are delving into the biomechanical and neurological processes that might contribute to the prevalence of this condition as we grow older. One day it may be possible to prevent the progression of diseases like Alzheimer’s, helping individuals live fuller lives.
