UCSF Medical Center Ranked 7th Best Hospital in the U.S. for 2016-17

UCSF Medical Center has been named among the nation’s premier medical institutions for the 15^th consecutive year, ranking as the seventh best hospital in the country in U.S. News & World Report’s 2016-2017 Best Hospitals survey.

UCSF received elite Honor Roll status for exceptional performance in 15 medical specialties, including eight in the top ten. It was both the top-ranked hospital in Northern California on the Honor Roll and the top cancer hospital in Northern California. Honor Roll standing is given to the hospitals nationwide that scored near the top in at least six adult specialties that involve treating the most challenging types of patient cases.  

Overall, UCSF ranked in the top 10 nationally in eight adult specialties, all of which also ranked first in Northern California: cancer; diabetes and endocrinology; gynecology; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; rheumatology; and urology.

In addition, in the Best Regional Hospital category, which focuses on hospitals that deliver a wide range of clinical services, UCSF Medical Center ranked No. 1 in the San Francisco-Oakland metropolitan area.

The annual listings were released Aug. 2, 2016.

It is gratifying to see this hard work recognized through these rankings.”

Last year, UCSF was ranked 8th overall and had 14 adult specialties that were recognized nationally.

In a separate set of pediatric rankings in June, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals placed among the nation’s premier children’s hospitals in all 10 pediatric specialties, and rated best in the Bay Area in five practices: cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, neonatology, neurology and neurosurgery, and urology.

UCSF Medical Center and the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals are the academic medicine hospitals of UC San Francisco, which includes advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care. UCSF’s graduate schools of medicine, nursing and pharmacy are regularly ranked among the top in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. (UCSF’s graduate school of dentistry is also highly recognized, though U.S. News does not rank this discipline.)

To determine the best hospitals nationally in adult specialties, U.S. News each year analyzes data from nearly 5,000 hospitals, as well as the results of surveys from approximately 140,000 physicians. The analysis includes multiple clinical specialties, procedures and conditions. Scores are based on a variety of patient outcome and care-related factors, such as patient safety and nurse staffing.

In addition to the top 10 rankings, UCSF placed among the country’s best hospitals for seven other adult specialties: cardiology and heart surgery; ear, nose and throat; gastroenterology and GI surgery; geriatrics; ophthalmology; psychiatry; and pulmonology. Only 153 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty.

UCSF Medical Center also earned high performance ratings for numerous common procedures within specialties: abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, heart failure, colon cancer surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hip replacement, knee replacement, and lung cancer surgery.  U.S. News evaluated nearly 4,400 hospitals for this portion of the survey.
