the 2025 Staff Engagement Survey

What: The annual survey focuses on the work experience of staff at UCSF and UCSF Health.

Why: This is your opportunity to shape UCSF’s ongoing efforts to be a supportive and welcoming workplace for all.

When: The survey launches on Tuesday, April 8 and runs through Friday, May 2.

How: You can access it during the survey period in one of three ways:

- The unique link sent to you in an email from Gallup
- The survey link on the homepage
- The generic link using your 8-digit UCSF Employee ID number as the survey code (omit the leading zero)

Staff at UC San Francisco will soon have an opportunity to weigh in on their work experience through the 2025 Staff Engagement Survey.

Launching on Tuesday, April 8, the annual Staff Engagement Survey is a critical tool for leadership and teams to understand more about the work experience at UCSF and UCSF Health, with the goal of creating a supportive and welcoming workplace for all. The survey focuses on the employee experience at UCSF and helps inform Engagement Action Plans at the team and organization level.

The survey is administered by Gallup, Inc., and is open to staff who have been employed at the university or health system at least three months.

Participating staff will receive a unique survey link from Gallup in an email.

As in previous years, individual responses will remain confidential. Results will only be shared in aggregate with departments and units to guide engagement action planning.

The survey runs through Friday, May 2.

“The annual Staff Engagement Survey helps us track our efforts to provide a supportive and welcoming environment for everyone at UCSF,” said UCSF Chancellor Sam Hawgood, MBBS, Arthur and Toni Rembe Rock Distinguished Professor. “Participating in the survey helps ensure that your voice is heard and contributes to our shared goal of making UCSF an exceptional workplace.”

The Staff Engagement Survey differs from the recently completed UCSF Community Climate Survey, which occurs every three years. That survey focuses on interpersonal, academic, and professional interactions for all faculty, staff, and learners across UCSF.

While this year’s Staff Engagement Survey questions remain the same as last year’s assessment, one notable addition is the inclusion of our newest colleagues from UCSF Health Saint Francis and St. Mary’s Hospitals, who are invited to participate along with staff at UCSF, UCSF Health, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals physicians, and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland staff.

Participating in the survey helps ensure that your voice is heard and contributes to our shared goal of making UCSF an exceptional workplace.”

Key survey themes

Participation matters because survey results help managers and teams take meaningful action to provide a supportive environment. It also gives UCSF and UCSF Health leadership valuable insights to better support staff in advancing our mission areas.

Data from previous surveys reflected many staff needs:

  • More support in navigating career opportunities
  • More development opportunities for people leaders
  • More support for teams acting on survey results

“Increased survey participation will give us better data across UCSF,” said Nancy Duranteau, chief learning officer, UCSF Learning and Organization Development (L&OD). “Taking the survey is just the first step. Then, managers can share their results and support action planning with their teams. We all have a role to play, and everyone benefits when we actively participate. I encourage you to take the survey and share your feedback.”

Actions driven by staff insights

Staff feedback plays a vital role in shaping UCSF’s workplace.

One key outcome is the recent launch of the UCSF Talent Marketplace, a platform powered by artificial intelligence that helps teammates leverage internal professional development opportunities and resources, build networks, and expand their skillsets. This initiative is part of UCSF’s enterprise-wide Engagement Action Plan, which provides staff with career pathing, mentorship, learning opportunities, and project participation – demonstrating UCSF’s commitment to fostering an environment where everyone can thrive.

Another theme from past survey data is the importance of supporting people managers with development and training opportunities that equip them to support their teams and drive results.

In 2024, L&OD launched Unlocking Engagement, an eCourse designed to help leaders understand engagement, connect it to daily work experiences, and create environments where all can do their best work.

UCSF has also revamped the Engagement Action Planning Guide and introduced a short self-directed resource, making it easier for teams to navigate action planning and take meaningful steps toward improvement at the local level.

What’s next?

Survey results will be available on Wednesday, May 14.

In June, staff will have the opportunity to join Hawgood, UCSF Health President and CEO Suresh Gunasekaran and UCSF’s Learning and Organization Development team for a town hall discussion on 2025 Staff Engagement Survey results and next steps.
