UCSF Health’s hospitals at Parnassus Heights, Mission Bay and Mount Zion received the 2024 Top Hospital award from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog organization that sets standards for health care safety and quality.

Leapfrog recognized the UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights’ Moffitt and Long hospitals, UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay, and the UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion for their exceptional patient safety and quality of care as teaching hospitals. This is the second consecutive year that UCSF Health medical centers at Parnassus Heights and Mount Zion have received this honor.

“This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our entire team and their unwavering commitment to providing safe, compassionate, and high-quality care to every patient who needs us,” said UCSF Health President and Chief Executive Officer Suresh Gunasekaran. “At UCSF Health, we remain focused on setting the highest standards in health care, fostering an environment of trust, excellence, and innovation.”

Nearly 2,400 hospitals were considered for the award in four categories: pediatric, general, rural and teaching. Fewer than 5% of hospitals were selected for this “Top Hospital” recognition.

To qualify for the distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance against the highest standards for quality and patient safety, and achieve top performance in their category.

Leapfrog also announced its annual hospital Safety Grades last month, which assess hospitals twice a year based on more than 30 national performance measures. UCSF Health medical centers at Parnassus Heights, Mission Bay and Mount Zion, as well as UCSF Health St. Mary’s Hospital earned an “A” safety grade from Leapfrog. UCSF Health Medical Center at Mission Bay has received an “A” grade for seven rating cycles in a row.

“At UCSF, quality and patient safety form the foundation for exceptional patient care,” said UCSF Chief Quality Officer and Vice President Amy Lu. “Being recognized as a Top Teaching Hospital and earning consecutive “A” grades reflect the remarkable teamwork, commitment, and expertise of our teams.”

UCSF Health consistently ranks among the nation’s leaders across health care’s most highly regarded rating systems. For three years in a row, Vizient has recognized UCSF Health as a top performer in its annual patient-care study. UCSF Medical Center has received a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for quality of care and is consistently named among the nation’s top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. UCSF Medical Center has also achieved the gold standard “Magnet recognition” for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for more than a decade.
