UCSF Health Opens Comprehensive Care Facility at Mission Bay
The new Bayfront Medical Building will expand access to a spectrum of health care, including primary, specialty and urgent care, as well as outpatient surgery.
UCSF is celebrating the opening of the UCSF Health Bayfront Medical Building, which brings new adult urgent care, primary care, same-day surgery, and specialty care to the community in a single setting.
Welcoming its first patients August 27, the building on UCSF’s Mission Bay campus will house more than 130 physicians, bringing together primary and secondary clinical care for roughly 131,000 patient visits per year, about a third of which will be for new patients.
“The Bayfront facility is all about expanding access to the world-class care that UCSF Health is known for, and making that care as convenient and comfortable as possible,” said Suresh Gunasekaran, president and chief executive officer of UCSF Health. “This is more than a building, but a delivery on our promise to the community that leading-edge, compassionate care should be available to anyone who needs it.”

Patient-centered, comprehensive services
With 6 new primary care doctors, the expanded capacity will open up approximately 20,000 new primary care patient visits per year. It also enables a spectrum of services that connect to primary and urgent care, including 14 operating rooms for outpatient surgery, 15 kinds of specialty care, a radiological imaging suite, a physical/occupational therapy gym, a retail and compounding pharmacy, and a laboratory for blood draws. This all-in-one care makes for a more convenient, patient-centered experience.
“Every aspect of this care center has been thoughtfully designed with our patients’ needs in mind so they have a single destination for comprehensive care right in their own neighborhood,” said Inga Lennes, MD, MPH, MBA, Senior Vice President, Ambulatory Services at UCSF Health. “Whether it’s a routine check-up or a more critical concern, our providers are here to serve patients so they can get the care they need when they need it and then sleep in their own bed that night.”
Bayfront will also house San Francisco’s largest ambulatory surgery center. The outpatient surgery wing includes state-of-the-art technology, allowing for procedures that don’t require an overnight stay. Four of the 14 outpatient operating rooms at Bayfront are designated for ophthalmologic care – offering cataract and cornea surgery, laser vision correction and glaucoma surgery – which will integrate seamlessly with clinical appointments at Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision next door.
The urgent care will have capacity for up to 16 patients at a time, providing a space for timely care of important but non-emergent issues such as ankle sprains, sore throats and ear pain. Open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week, the urgent care will help close the gap in same-day care that has long strained emergency departments and inpatient facilities across the city, and eventually expand to 16 hours a day.
Medical specialty areas in the building include Allergy, Audiology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Ear, Nose and Throat, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Neurosurgery, Pain Medicine, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, Pulmonology (Interstitial Lung Disease), Rheumatology, Urology, and Vascular Surgery.
Integrated care in a light-filled, efficient space
The five-story, all-electric, 181,000-square-foot building at 520 Illinois Street is designed with wood trim and light-filled spaces, as well as paintings and murals by local artists that brighten hallways and exam rooms, providing a healing environment for patients.
The building is accessible by public transportation and is attached to a new nine-floor parking garage. Bayfront Medical Building features comfortable indoor and outdoor seating and sculpture, lactation rooms, and a café.
“Everything we do at UCSF Health is driven by a shared belief that health care is a human right and everyone deserves access to the best care in a compassionate, healing environment,” said Gunasekaran. “Bayfront is a milestone in our ongoing investment in the community to advance innovation in both the care we provide and the overall patient journey.”
