UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals in Oakland and San Francisco and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford have been ranked among the nation’s best children’s hospitals by the new U.S. News & World Report annual survey.
The hospitals were ranked in all 10 pediatric specialties in the survey. UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals in Oakland and San Francisco were ranked fifth nationwide and best in the west in neonatology — the branch of medicine dealing with the care and treatment of newborn babies. Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford was recognized as the sixth best nationwide in neonatology.
In addition, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals were recognized as the best in Northern California in pediatric cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, gastroenterology and GI surgery, and neurology and neurosurgery. The hospitals also scored highly in five other pediatric specialties: diabetes, kidney disorders, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology.
“We are very gratified that UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals continue to be recognized by the U.S. News annual survey for excellence in pediatric care,” said Mark R. Laret, president and chief executive officer of UCSF Health, in a news release from UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals.
Packard Children’s earned the top rank in California for the nephrology program. Its pulmonology program ranked best on the West Coast and eighth in the country, and the endocrinology program is the top-ranked one in Northern California.
“The continual ranking in the top 20 of all children’s hospitals affirms the exceptional quality of care that Stanford Children’s Health faculty, physicians and team members continue to provide to patients and their families,” Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford said in a statement.
The annual rankings were announced Tuesday.
“This is a wonderful validation of the tremendous work that our clinical teams have performed over the past few years as we work to unify efforts across our hospitals,” said Dr. Michael Anderson, a pediatrician and president of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals, in a statement from the hospitals.
The methodology reflects clinical outcomes, such as patient survival, infection rates and complications; the level of hospital resources directly related to patient care, including staffing, special services and technology; delivery of health care, such as programs to prevent infection and promote adherence to best practices; and expert opinion from surveys of more than 11,000 pediatric specialists.
Among the 191 children’s hospitals reviewed this year, 84 hospitals were ranked among the top 50 in at least one specialty.
