UCSF Alumnus to Give Lecture on New MRI Applications

A lecture about Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and its new applications will occur on May 1. William G. Bradley, Jr., MD, PhD, professor and chair of UC San Diego’s Department of Radiology and an alumnus of UC San Francisco, will return to campus as the 2014 Margulis Alumnus Lecturer.

Bradley will present “MRI Over the Next Decade: Quo Vadis?” He will discuss some new MRI applications including faster scanning using parallel imaging and compressed sensing, intraoperative MRI, MR-guided focused ultrasound, hyperpolarized C-13 MR spectroscopy and hand-held MRI.

The biennial Margulis Alumnus Lecture was created in 2010 and recognizes a notable alumnus of the UCSF Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging who has succeeded in life, and academia or the private sector.

Bradley received his BS degree at the California Institute of Technology and his PhD at Princeton University, both in Chemical Engineering. He completed all of his medical training at UCSF (including his medical degree, internship and 1981 diagnostic radiology residency).

While at UCSF, Bradley first became involved in magnetic resonance imaging, initially “translating" the physics of MRI for other radiologists. His subsequent research has been focused on MRI of flow phenomena, hemorrhage, stroke, MS, and normal pressure hydrocephalus as well as other topics involving MRI of the brain.

Bradley is a past president of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) and has won its 2 highest honors for his research (Gold Medal and Honorary Member). He was on the Board of Trustees of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Research and Education Foundation (1995–2001) and served as the Chairman of the Fund Development Committee of that organization from 1996 to 2008.

He was honored with the Gold Medal of the RSNA in 2003. Dr. Bradley was also on the Board of Chancellors of the American College of Radiology (ACR), where he chaired the Commission on Neuroradiology and MRI from 1999 to 2005 and served as Vice President 2005-6. He was honored with the Gold Medal of the ACR in April 2012.

He is currently on the Boards of the International Society for Strategic Studies in Radiology, the Association of University Radiologists, the Academy of Radiology Research and the Academy of Radiology Leadership and Management. He has published more than 200 papers, 54 chapters, and 21 textbooks. 

The Margulis Alumnus Lecture will be held on May 1, 2014, at 6:15 p.m. in Room N-225, 2nd floor of the Nursing Building (enter at 521 Parnassus Avenue). Prior to the lecture, light refreshments will be served in the Nursing Mezzanine on the 3rd floor. Following the lecture there will be a reception in the Nursing Mezzanine.
