Stem Cell Research Soars to New Heights in Spectacular Building

Matthias Hebrok, PhD, director of the UCSF Diabetes Center and Metabolic Research Unit, looks at a film with Michael German, MD, Justine K. Schreyer Endowed Chair in Diabetes Research and an endocrinologist at UCSF Medical Center, in the new Ray and Dagmar Dolby Regeneration Medicine Building. The architecturally significant structure, located on the University’s Parnassus campus, is the headquarters for the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCSF. Babies Benefit from High Rates for Breastfeeding at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital

Bold Head-Shaving Event Supports Children with Cancer

UCSF pediatric cancer specialist Benjamin Braun, MD, PhD, was among several UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital doctors, as well as hospital staff and community members, who had their heads shaved bald to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer research. The event in June raised $30,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a nonprofit organization that hosts worldwide events where volunteers collect pledges and shave their heads to support kids with cancer. Developing Innovative AIDS Treatment for People Over Age 50

The San Francisco Department of Public Health and UCSF have been awarded a grant from the California HIV/AIDS Research Program to develop innovative treatment models and a new standard of care for treating people over the age of 50 infected with HIV. The leaders in developing these models include Brad Hare, MD, medical director of the UCSF Positive Health Program — Ward 86, the HIV/AIDS clinic at the UCSF-affiliated San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. UCSF welcomed more than 400 new residents and clinical fellows to the Parnassus campus in July for an orientation to the campus community, the start of their next phase of training in health sciences.The new arrivals came from all backgrounds and were spread out among dozens of specialties, but they all shared the excitement of starting the next chapter of their lives at an institution known throughout the world for top-quality academics, biomedical research and clinical care. Democratic Leader Kicks Off First-Ever Bay Area Science Festival

Mission Bay Block Party Offers Fun for All

Medical Students Take Part in Traditional White Coat Ceremony

Sam Hawgood, MBBS, dean of the UCSF School of Medicine, welcomed 167 brand-new medical students in September during the annual White Coat Ceremony.
