UCSF Child Oncologists to Participate in Head-Shaving Fundraiser
In a bold demonstration of support for the many children with cancer they have treated over the years, several UCSF doctors and other staff members will have their heads shaved bald in a special event June 8 to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer research.
The event, open to the UCSF community, will raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
St. Baldrick’s is a nonprofit organization that raises funds for childhood cancer research by hosting worldwide events where volunteers who have collected pledges shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer, who often lose their hair during chemotherapy.
UCSF participants include pediatric cancer specialists Steven DuBois, MD; Robert Goldsby, MD; and Jason Law, MD, as well as Kate Matthay, MD, chief of pediatric oncology at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.
“St. Baldrick’s has given generously to UCSF over the years in support of our clinical and basic research programs, and now it’s time for us to give a little back,” Matthay said. “This is also a wonderful opportunity for us to show our heartfelt support for our heroic young patients.”
The event will be held on Wednesday, June 8, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Kezar Pub on Stanyan Street in San Francisco. Anyone is welcome to attend. A $10 donation will buy the right to cut off a lock of hair from the shavee of your choice, while the highest bidder will earn the right to shave the person bald.
More information about the event, including an online donation form, is available here.
