Media Advisory: UCSF Therapy Clinic Showcases Latest in Rehabilitation Technology

In celebration of their new state-of-the-art academic and clinical center, the UCSF School of Medicine’s Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science invites media to an open house featuring tours and interactive demonstrations featuring the latest in PT technology.

The event will include a demonstration of an anti-gravity treadmill that “unweights” up to 80 percent of the user’s body weight, offering personalized precision benefits to those recovering from injury or surgery, without the pain and risk associated with full-weight impact on joints, bones, tendons and muscles. The event also will feature a demonstration of the “Bionic Leg,” a device equipped with multiple sensors and microprocessors that can detect the user’s actions – such as sitting, standing or climbing stairs – and adjust support and flexibility accordingly. This innovative therapy is designed to treat mobility problems related to stroke, aging, and impaired brain function associated with Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis.

In addition to conducting cutting-edge clinical care, the department’s new center is home to one of the country’s most prestigious graduate programs in Physical Therapy, administered in conjunction with San Francisco State University.
