UCSF Hosts Christy Turlington Burns' No Woman No Cry Documentary

WHAT: UCSF Global Health Sciences and the UCSF Bixby Center Safe Motherhood Program welcome supermodel Christy Turlington Burns for the California premiere of No Woman, No Cry.The one-hour film, which documents the experience of childbirth around the world, will be followed by a panel discussion with Burns and two maternal health experts: Suellen Miller, PhD, director of the UCSF Safe Motherhood Program and scientific advisor on the documentary; and Nan Strauss, of Amnesty International, co-author of Deadly Delivery: The Maternal Health Care Crisis in the USA.

WHY:   More than 350,000 women die during pregnancy and childbirth every year, or roughly 40 every hour. While most maternal deaths occur in developing countries, the United States ranks 41st globally in maternal health, and California maternal mortality rates nearly tripled from 1996-2006. The event will bring this issue home with expert updates on the struggle for reproductive health and rights for girls and women worldwide.
