Charitable Giving Campaign Nears its Final Days
Faculty and staff have a couple more weeks left to contribute to the health and well being of the community through the 2010 UCSF Charitable Giving Campaign, themed “The Heart of UCSF.”
This is the final call for employees to contribute to the annual campaign, which provides critical financial support to nonprofit organizations that provide shelter to the homeless, food for the hungry, care for the underserved and refuge to victims of domestic violence, among other humanitarian efforts.

As you may have read in UCSF Today, this year, the UCSF Charitable Giving Campaign went green, which means all donations to organizations can be done online through the Community Health Charities of California webpage.
It is important to note that the online form works best using Internet Explorer.
The online-only campaign and the lackluster economy have led to a less than stellar year for the annual campaign, which has brought in about $10,500 so far, according to Krystie Skull, executive director of Community Health Charities of California, which administers the program for UCSF.
Even last year, during the deep economic recession when some employees took pay cuts and others were laid off, the UCSF community collectively contributed more than $50,000 through the campaign.
As such, Community Health Charities of California is providing extra incentives to give – on top of the warm, fuzzy feeling donors can get for giving to worthy causes such as the San Francisco Food Bank.
One of the recipients of donations to the UCSF Charitable Giving Campaign, the San Francisco Food Bank provides food to 200,000 people in the local community. This year, record numbers of people are turning up at food banks in San Francisco and across the nation as the US grapples with an economic downturn and high unemployment.
The San Francisco Food Bank is dependent on donations to keep up with the high demand for food assistance. In fact, the San Francisco Food Bank saw a 32 percent increase in requests at the Thanksgiving holiday and is expecting demand to remain at all-time highs. This year alone, the food bank will distribute 41.5 million pounds of food – 60 percent made up of fruit and vegetables – to the local community.
Every day volunteers and staff members at the San Francisco Food Bank must source, collect, sort, inspect and repackage thousands of pounds of food before redistributing them to local soup kitchens, grocery centers, school programs and seniors.
As always, UCSF employees may give to the life-saving and life-enhancing programs and services provided by UCSF, UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital and affiliates. To select a program, refer to the 2010 UCSF Charitable Giving Campaign brochure, which is posted here [PDF].
In an effort to increase pledges, drawings will be held for anyone who donates using the online pledge form. All UCSF Charitable Giving Campaign donors are eligible to win these prizes:
