UCSF Finishes as Top Five Fundraising Team in Final AIDS Walk Results

Debra Delaney, right, who is the first-time walker to raise the most money in AIDS Walk San Francisco, takes a break with her daughter, Sarah Delaney, who works at UCSF’s Millberry Fitness and Recreation Center, and Greg Whisman, general manager of Milberry Fitness Center and Recreation Center.

UCSF’s coalition of 17 teams raised $45,640 in AIDS Walk San Francisco 2010—finishing in fifth place and surpassing the goal set by the campus steering committee.

The top five teams this year are Gap ($144,490), Levi Strauss & Co. ($82,916), Chevron Corp. $55,547, AIDS Walk Foundation ($47,979) and UCSF, according to AIDS Walk San Francisco.

Some 310 walkers who are affiliated with UCSF registered for the event on July 18. Collectively, an estimated 25,000 individuals raised more than $3 million at the 24th Annual AIDS Walk San Francisco. These funds will help the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and 59 other Bay Area AIDS service organizations, including some programs at UCSF, continue working to combat AIDS in the community.

For his efforts as the individual who raised the most money ($3,400), Robert Mansfield, an analyst for UCSF Global Health Sciences, received an iPad, one of the two top prizes awarded by the UCSF AIDS Walk Steering Committee.

“It’s fun and it’s for a good cause,” said Mansfield, who hit up his friends and colleagues to donate. “People want to do something good for the community you just have to give them the opportunity.”

Mansfield, who served on the steering committee, also was captain of the first-place Global Health Sciences team which raised $9,486. He and some of his fellow team members enjoyed a reception with UCSF Chancellor Sue Desmond-Hellmann, MD, MPH, who presented a trophy to the winning team on Aug. 3.

The other top prize, also an iPad, went to first-time AIDS event walker Debra Delaney, who raised more than $1,500. She is the mother of Sarah Delaney, who works at the Millberry Fitness and Recreation Center at UCSF and raised $400. The mother and daughter were both on same team.

Next year, San Francisco will mark the 25th anniversary of AIDS Walk San Francisco.
