UCSF Psychiatrist to Moderate Discussion with Rosalynn Carter

UCSF Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Robert Hendren, DO, will moderate a public forum with Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter at the Commonwealth Club of California on Friday, Aug. 13.

The event is the headline attraction for a month-long series honoring women of extraordinary achievement in technology, science, adventure and civil rights.

In the discussion titled, “Rosalynn Carter: Ending the Mental Health Crisis,” the Former First Lady will discuss her decades-long work in the mental health field and will offer her assessment of the state of mental health, as well as a roadmap for its future.

As moderator, Hendren will facilitate a question/answer session with Carter addressing problems facing the current mental health system and what she sees as solutions. Following the program, Carter also will sign copies of her new book, “Within Our Reach: Ending the Mental Health Crisis.”

A tireless advocate who was awarded the UCSF Medal in 2003, Carter has been devoted to the prevention and treatment of mental illness since 1970, when her husband Jimmy was elected governor of Georgia. Since then, she has led The Carter Center’s Mental Health Task Force — a group of experts who promote positive change in the mental health field. In addition, the Rosalynn Carter Fellowship provides funding for journalists writing about mental illnesses.

An internationally recognized psychiatrist, Hendren also is vice-chair of the UCSF Department of Psychiatry, the immediate past president of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and former executive director of the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute (Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders).
