Miaskowski First Nurse Scientist to Receive ACS Clinical Research Professorship

Christine Miaskowski, RN, PhD, FAAN, associate dean, professor, and Sharon A. Lamb Endowed Chair in Nursing at the UCSF School of Nursing, is the first nurse scientist to be named an American Cancer Society (ACS) Clinical Research Professor.
An internationally recognized expert on pain and symptom management, Miaskowski has 278 peer-reviewed publications and almost $30 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health.
The ACS states that this award is “granted to outstanding mid-career investigators who have made seminal contributions that have changed the direction of clinical, psychosocial, behavioral, health policy, or epidemiologic cancer research.”
When asked what she considers to be the most significant contribution to the field of pain, Miaskowski explained it was the ability to unravel the complex mechanisms that underlie the development of chronic pain.
“The fact that one can now say that chronic pain is a medical condition and not just a symptom is an extraordinary achievement,” she said in an article recently published by the ACS.
Miaskowski earned a PhD degree in physiology and MS degree in biology at St. John’s University. She earned an MS degree in nursing at Adelphi University and a BS degree in Nursing at Molloy College.
