On every other Tuesday afternoon, UCSF experts hit the airwaves at KPOO-FM, a community radio station located a few blocks from the University’s Mount Zion campus.

Focus on Women’s Health in the Community is a live show that advances the UCSF Strategic Plan’s vision of serving our community.
“The radio program strengthens partnerships within the UCSF community at Mount Zion,” said Dixie Horning, executive director of the UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health. “The radio hour presents the opportunity to expand on current partnerships and establish new ones. Using these partnerships as the basis for programming, we inform our community of our work.”
Focus on Women’s Health in the Community is an example of how UCSF is forming strong partnerships in the community and contributing to the reduction of health disparities. The program convenes health experts and sheds light on topics that reach out to regular KPOO listeners.
As host, Auerbach brings to the show a background in communications and broadcasting. He has served as a producer and host on KALW-FM radio in San Francisco and at other community-based radio stations in the Bay Area and throughout the country. In addition to his work at UCSF, Auerbach is currently providing content to a music website in development. He also is an accomplished photographer and musician.
“Radio is a medium built on immediacy,” said Auerbach. “Producing the radio program furthers the CoE’s outreach goals because we can introduce UCSF programs at Mount Zion to the community through the voices of those who are directly involved in the work.”
KPOO is a community-based, nonprofit, noncommercial radio station that caters to the needs of populations traditionally underrepresented in the mainstream media. Since its start, the station has been under African American ownership, and it serves the Bay Area’s Latino community with several bilingual programs a week. It also produces programs concerning Irish American, Arab American and Native American issues.
The station’s mission includes airing topics of concern to minorities, women, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, low-income households, and youths. Radio is proven to be an effective medium to communicate with underserved communities.
“The partnership between CoE and KPOO is exciting because we share similar goals,” said Auerbach. “We are both trying to empower underserved communities.”
