William P. Dillon, MD, the Elizabeth A. Guillaumin Endowed Chair, executive vice chair of radiology and section chief of neuroradiology, recently received the 2008 Gold Medal from American Society of Head and Neck Radiology (ASHNR). Dillon was honored on Sept. 11 during the 42nd Annual ASHNR Meeting at the Hilton Toronto Hotel in Toronto, Canada, for his contributions to the field of head and neck imaging and to the radiology society. Dillon attended medical school at UCLA and an internship at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle. He completed his radiology residency at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. In his last year of residency, Dillon was inspired by Anthony A. Mancuso, MD, to learn more about imaging of the head and neck. Dillon’s passion for the field of head and neck radiology had begun. Dillon served his neuroradiology fellowship at UCSF Medical Center under the tutelage of the radiology giants Alexander Margulis, MD, Thomas Newton, MD, and David Norman, MD. Following his fellowship, Dillon joined the UCSF neuroradiology faculty. His career spans the spectrum from clinical expertise and research to teaching and administrative accomplishments. He became chief of the section in 1992. Under his steady hand, UCSF has continued to be a world-renowned leader in the field of neuroradiology and head and neck imaging. Dillon received the Francis A. Sooy, MD, Award for Clinical Excellence from the UCSF Department of Otolaryngology in 1993, and has been selected as one of the Best Doctors of America every year since 1995. Dillon’s many publications range across all areas of neuroradiology. He has served as senior editor of the American Journal of Neuroradiology since 1996, fostering the quantity and quality of research publications in the field. His ability to make complex concepts simple and clear has created visiting professorships for him across the country and internationally.
