Integrative Medicine Expert to Speak at UCSF About Eating Disorders

The UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine is hosting a free public lecture by Carolyn Coker Ross, MD, MPH, a nationally known author and speaker on the integrative medicine approach to the treatment of eating disorders. Such an approach offers a combination of conventional therapies and complementary and alternative therapies to address lifestyle issues, nutritional deficiencies and the biopsychosocial aspects of the full spectrum of eating disorders. The event is part of a two-year lecture series on pediatric and adolescent health that is supported by the Pritzker Family Fund. This series features a range of integrative medicine topics relevant to children, early adolescents and teens, and supports parents in making decisions that are best for their families. The lecture is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 4, from noon to 1 p.m. in Herbst Hall on the Mount Zion campus. RSVP to Christina Bernard at 415/353-7785 or [email protected]. Ross completed medical school at the University of Michigan, did a residency in preventive medicine at Loma Linda University and completed a two-year fellowship at the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. She was chief of the Eating Disorders Program at Sierra Tucson and currently is a consultant for treatment centers in eating disorders and integrative medicine. Ross is also in an integrative medicine private practice in Denver and Boulder, Colorado, specializing in treating eating disorders and obesity. Ross’ most recent book is Healing Body, Mind and Spirit: An Integrative Medicine Approach to the Treatment of Eating Disorders. Her next book, The Binge Eating and Compulsive Overeating Workbook, is due to be published in late 2009. Ross also has developed a line of supplements as a result of her research designed to support the recovery of patients with eating disorders and obesity. The mission of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine is to transform the way medicine is practiced by researching the most effective treatments from around the world, educating medical students, and treating patients with complete care that addresses all aspects of health and wellness – biological, psychological, social and spiritual.
