Avon Walk for Breast Cancer to Benefit UCSF-SFGH Partnership

Judith Luce, a clinical professor at UCSF, accepted the check for more than $1 million from the Avon Foundation last year.

It’s not too late to join the effort to fight breast cancer during this weekend’s Avon walk through the streets of San Francisco. The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and13. The two-day walk raises money to support breast cancer research, community outreach and education, and safety net medical care for uninsured and underserved people. Since 2001, Avon Foundation has provided more than $17 million to support the UCSF and San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) partnership in cancer research and treatment. Judith Luce, MD, a clinical professor of medicine, accepted the award for more than $1 million from Avon last year. To register or support a walker, visit www.avonwalk.org . To volunteer at the event, contact Shermineh Jafarieh, Avon program manager, at 415/476-4082, ext. 416. Those who would rather cheer on the walkers are invited to do so on July 13, from 10 a.m. to noon at San Francisco General Hospital Avon Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center. Funds raised from the walk will continue to support the center, provide mobile mammography throughout San Francisco, support patient-navigation staff and provide genetic screening to uninsured women – the first program of its kind in the country. Financial support also will allow SFGH to conduct research studies and enable women who are treated at SFGH to access novel breast cancer treatments and clinical trials.
