UCSF Promotes Wellness with New Initiatives

Faculty, staff, students and trainees are encouraged to participate in a new campuswide approach to promote health and well-being. Last week, Campus Life Services and UCSF Medical Center launched a new weekly farmers' market, a partnership with the Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association. The inaugural weekly farmers' market on May 14 was a smashing success judging by the crowds that nearly depleted the supply of healthy, seasonal and convenient food options supplied and sold by local farmers, says Rebecca Krueger, wellness coordinator for Campus Life Services. The farmers' market is open every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the breezeway between the Ambulatory Care Center and Milberry Union, 400 - 500 Parnassus Ave. Today, Campus Life Services and UCSF Medical Center are partnering to offer the UCSF community a campuswide walking program to help faculty, staff, students and trainees maintain and improve their health. The program launch coincides with National Employee Health and Fitness Day. As part of the program, individuals can sign up online and receive a free, high-quality pedometer. Campus Life Services will be giving out pedometers to any faculty, staff and student who signs up online to participate in the program.

The campus community is invited to the UCSF farmers' market, which is open every Wednesday on the Parnassus campus.

Once an individual signs up, he or she will receive instructions on how to pick up a pedometer. Every person must be present to receive a pedometer; only one pedometer per registered user. To sign up for the UCSF walking program, please visit the website. Other features of the program include a web-based activity tracker, walking routes, resources, contests, events and more. Pedometer pick up sites include:
  • Parnassus Central Desk, 500 Parnassus Ave., Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.
  • Laurel Heights Conference Center, 3333 California St., room 20, Sub-level 1, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

UCSF's wellness program is also supported by the UC Office of the President (UCOP), which rolled out the UC Living Well Program. See more information at the UCOP website.
