The American Asthma Foundation and the UCSF Foundation invite the campus community and the public at large to a forum titled "Finding a Cure for Asthma" on Thursday, Jan. 24.
The event, which begins at 11:30 a.m. for registration and includes a luncheon, will be held in the Fisher Banquet Room at the William J. Rutter Center at the UCSF Mission Bay campus, 1675 Owens St. The cost is $45 per person. Space is limited; reservations should be made by Thursday, Jan. 17.
Marion Sandler, chairman of the board of directors of the American Asthma Foundation, will serve as moderator for the forum, which will feature a panel discussion with UCSF experts in treating and studying the disease. Panelists and their topics are as follows:
* "The Growing Asthma Epidemic Among Children," presented by Cynthia Kim, MD, medical director, UCSF Pediatric Urgent Care
* "Caring for Patients with Asthma," presented by Joshua Adler, MD, medical director, UCSF Ambulatory Care
* "Advances in Understanding the Disease," presented by Homer Boushey, MD, director, UCSF Asthma Clinical Research Center
* "Progress Towards a Cure: Breakthroughs in Asthma Research," presented by William Seaman, MD, program director, Sandler Program for Asthma Research
Asthma is classified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a major public health problem of increasing concern in the United States. Nearly one in 13 Americans has asthma, a disease that affects the lungs. It causes repeated episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and nighttime or early morning coughing. Asthma can be controlled by taking medicine and avoiding the triggers that can cause an attack.
