WHAT:
A discussion about the health and human rights among women in Afghanistan today, sponsored by the UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health.
WHO:
Dr. Sima Samar, a 1982 graduate of Kabul University Medical College, is a recognized leader for education among Afghan women, children and refugees. After fleeing for her safety to Pakistan, she helped open the first hospital for women in Quetta, Pakistan.
Dr. Samar also established the largest Afghan women-led non-governmental organization, the Shuhada Organization, committed to the reconstruction and development of Afghanistan with special emphasis on the empowerment of women and children. She operates schools in rural Afghanistan and Quetta that have educated over 20,000 children. From 2001-2002, she served as the deputy prime minister of women’s affairs for the interim administration of Afghanistan.
