UCSF to Commemorate World AIDS Day on Dec. 1
The campus community is invited to a symposium, themed "AIDS and Our Communities: The AIDS Research Institute at UCSF Responds," on Thursday, Dec. 1 from 2 to 5 p.m. in Cole Hall on the Parnassus campus.
The symposium, sponsored by the AIDS Research Institute (ARI), will present advances made in AIDS research and care, and will explain how those advances impact the broader community.
The symposium represents a time for the campus community to come together and hear about advances UCSF is making in AIDS research and care and how those advances impact the broader community. It is also a time to reflect on progress made to date and what are future goals, and to recommit to the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Helene Gayle, director of the HIV, TB and Reproductive Health program of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will be the keynote speaker. Other speakers will include UCSF faculty members Jay Levy, Warner Greene, Susan Buchbinder, Steve Morin and Paul Volberding, all leaders in their respective fields of research at UCSF. John Greenspan, director of the ARI, will give opening remarks.
In addition, the ARI is planning "An Evening of Remembrance and Hope: A Musical Observance of World AIDS Day" to be held in the new Community Center Auditorium at UCSF Mission Bay from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1. Call David Robb at 415/597-9203 for more information.
The concert features jazz sensation Spencer Day and voices of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus. The concert will be followed by a reception in the lobby, featuring an exhibit titled"Rattlesnake in a Moving Car: Life with HIV" by artist Rob Anderson, giving a human face and heartfelt voice to the circumstance of being a longtime survivor of HIV. Concert tickets are $25, $50 and $100 per person; call or email Kathleen Lorenzo at 415/597-4650 for details.
