Expert Excerpts: Hear Stem Cell Scientists Discuss What Comes Next

Arnold Kriegstein, director of the Institute for Stem Cell and Tissue Biology, right, and Arvid Carlsson, professor emeritus of pharmacology, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, were among the panelists.

In a recent panel discussion held at UCSF's Genentech Hall, seven prominent scientists pondered aloud the promise and pitfalls of stem cell research.

Excerpts from the evening are presented below. The full 90-minute discussion is available for viewing in Real Media as well. The evening's moderator was David A. Kessler, MD, dean of UCSF's School of Medicine and vice chancellor for medical affairs.

The panelists included: • J. Michael Bishop, MD, chancellor of UCSF, University Professor and Nobel laureate
• Jeffrey Bluestone, PhD, director of the Diabetes Center at UCSF and professor of medicine
• Arvid Carlsson, MD, emeritus professor of pharmacology, University of Gotehnburg, Sweden and Nobel laureate
• Elena Gates, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at UCSF
• Arnold Kriegstein, PhD, MD, director of the Developmental and Stem Cell Biology Program and professor of neurology at UCSF
• Stanley Prusiner, MD, professor of neurology at UCSF and Nobel laureate
• Renee Reijo Pera, PhD, associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at UCSF.
