MEDIA ADVISORY: UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals Host Annual St. Baldrick’s Fundraiser for Pediatric Cancer Research

What: More than 150 people have signed up to shave their heads at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland on March 16, to support the 12th annual Brave the Shave fundraiser for pediatric cancer research. Ten barber chairs in the hospital atrium are fully scheduled for the day with volunteer stylists to shave UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals’ physicians, nurses and staff, as well as patients, family members, elected officials, and local police and fire fighters.

KGO-TV weatherman Spencer Christian will emcee the event, featuring performances by the local nonprofit Peter Pan Foundation, as well as music, food, games and raffle prizes that include a 1-week stay at a luxury condo in Maui, a VIP box at the Oakland As, autographed Steph Curry Warriors jersey, sailing on the Bay, and many more. Media are invited to attend the event for photography and interviews. 

When:  Saturday, March 16, 2019, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

  • Bert Lubin, M.D., former CEO, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland
  • Anne Kirkpatrick, Oakland Police Chief
  • Jessica Labbe, St Baldrick’s Foundation (in recognition of over $2 million raised at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland)
  • Current and former pediatric cancer patients and families speaking about their experiences and the need for public support of research. 

Visuals: Volunteer local barbers, stylists and participants; speakers and patient families; arts and theater performances by the Peter Pan Foundation; Disney and animated characters interacting with the audience; and PUN, a local muse and magician.
