Bringing the War Back Home
A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine by Karen Seal, MD, MPH, and colleagues at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the University of California, San Francisco, measures mental illness in injured vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. According to their analysis, about one third of the 103,788 returning veterans seen at VA facilities between September 30, 2001 and September 30, 2005 were diagnosed with mental illness or a psycho-social disorder-such as homelessness and marital problems, including domestic violence.
